"As an expression of our Christian faith, Hartford Area Habitat for
Humanity will work with people of diverse faiths and backgrounds to
build affordable homes and to provide homeownership opportunities for
low income families in the Capital Region.
We will work in partnership with these families and with each other to build a better community in which decent housing is both a matter of conscience and of fact."

Located in Hartford and serving the Capital Region of the State of Connecticut, Hartford Area Habitat for Humanity is the local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. Since 1989 and with the hard work and dedication of our volunteers, homeowners and staff we have completed over 185 homes! The growth in our building program has been a blessing for our Habitat homeowners and our community.
About Hartford Area Habitat for Humanity, Inc.
Hartford Area Habitat for Humanity (Hartford Habitat) received its Affiliate Charter in April 1989 and serves the 33 towns of the Capitol Region in central Connecticut. Since 1989, HAHfH has completed 185 homes housing over 700 individuals in greater Hartford. We have focused our building efforts in Hartford and several of the surrounding towns. Although we expect that the majority of our building activit
y will continue to be in
Hartford, we are committed to eliminating inadequate housing in all of
the towns in our 33-town region. We have several active high school and college chapters and we are working with other
communities to form chapters of this Affiliate in other areas within the
Capitol Region that are interested in undertaking Habitat projects.
Hartford Area Habitat for Humanity has committed itself to increasing
the number of homes we plan to build in future years. Having been
blessed by leaders who were both well grounded and visionary, Hartford
Habitat enjoys a favorable reputation both locally and among other
affiliates in the northeastern region of the U.S. as well as at Habitat
for Humanity International in Americus, Georgia.
Each affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International is primarily and
directly responsible for the legal, organizational, fund-raising, family
selection and nurturing, financial, and construction aspects of its
work. Each of the approximately 2,200 affiliates in the U.S. and 50
other countries are governed by a local board of directors. The
affiliate selects homeowner families according to criteria that do not
discriminate on the basis of race, creed, ethnicity, or religious
preference. Hartford Area Habitat counts among its supporters more than
14,000 volunteers from area foundations, corporations, congregations, civic and
professional associations, and schools.

MYTH: Habitat for Humanity is a Southern poverty program.
TRUTH: Habitat for Humanity International started in the Southern United States and remains based in Americus, Ga. It is a global partnership, however, drawing families in need together with volunteers and resources to build simple, decent houses all over the world. Habitat has worked in more than 3,000 communities in some 100 countries.
