Frequently Asked Questions - On Homeownership
Q. How can a family qualify?
A. Ability to repay the zero-interest mortgage to Habitat; willingness to partner with Hartford Habitat; and, the need for simple, decent housing. Unlike a standard developer we don’t make a profit on our houses and unlike a bank we don’t charge interest on the mortgage loan.
Q. Once a family qualifies, what do they have to do to purchase a Habitat house?
A. Each adult has to work at least 150 hours with volunteers to help build their house and other Habitat houses. They also have to make a down payment of 2% and they attend a number of homebuyer training classes that Habitat offers.
Q. How can potential homebuyers learn about qualifying?
A. Potential homebuyers can get that information at one of our frequent “applicant information meetings.” They last about 1 ½ hours and we usually hold them on Saturday mornings.
