The Leonard Family
In the summer of 2008, Tracy Leonard heard whisperings of Hartford Area Habitat for Humanity homes being built in South Glastonbury. That fall there was a small snippet in the local newspaper confirming discussions were ongoing between the town and Habitat.
Eager to pursue this potential opportunity, she called Habitat to confirm and inquire as to the process. She was told to follow up in 8 months. A follow up call in May 2009 informed her she would need to attend the Prospective Homeowner Applicant Meeting in September. The rest, they say, is history.
Ms. Leonard is a mathematics graduate of Albertus Magnus College. She is employed in the IT industry and finds her job fulfilling; enjoying the technical challenges she faces every day. Ms. Leonard and her sons, Stephen and Matthew, have rented in Glastonbury for several years. They are active in the Little League and Basketball Associations. They have moved many times in the boys’ young lives and always hoped to have the ability to put down roots somewhere to call home. Her dream was to be a homeowner!
Through her sweat equity composed of building Habitat Homes in Hartford and East Hartford and volunteering for other charitable organizations, her boys have experienced first-hand what it means to give their time and talent in service to others. This is also the theme of the entire faithful community of their church. She and her boys practice this community service through their church via religious education, children’s community service organizations and Helen Cooper Food Pantry in Hartford. Hartford Area Habitat for Humanity gives a ‘hand up’ not a ‘hand out’.
Through Ms. Leonard’s financial acumen, understanding the ‘sweat’ needed to help other deserving families and understanding what it means to be ‘in partnership’ with Hartford Area Habitat for Humanity helped Ms. Leonard to earn this opportunity for her and her two boys. This home would not have been made possible, too, if it wasn’t for the many family and friends of their church community volunteering their time by giving child care for her two boys while she fulfilled her partnership responsibilities. For this, she is forever grateful and knows her home is a true blessing
