Program Information
Hartford Area Habitat for Humanity is looking for families that want to build and buy their own home. We want to work in partnership with them. We are building new, single-family houses in several different Hartford neighborhoods as well as in surrounding communities.
Potential homeowners are eligible to apply if their income falls within the 30-50 percent of the median family income for Hartford County and the requirement varies with the size of the family.
Applicants who are eligible to apply must meet the three qualifications:
- Be able to pay for Habitat housing as well as to meet your other expenses
- Be willing to partner with us in building your house as well as the houses of others.
- Must have a need for simple, decent, adequate housing.
Ability to pay means that a family has enough income to cover the monthly payment for theirr new house as well as all other expenses. A standard three-bedroom Habitat house costs about $100,000. Our average homeowner spends $600-650 a month to own his or her house: principal, property taxes, and property insurance. Utilities are not included. How does that compare with the amount you now spend?
Willingness to partner is our way of saying that we will build this house together with a potential family. We require a two percent down payment ($2,000), 150 sweat equity hours from each applicant, and attendance at workshops on skills necessary for successful homeownership.
Need can be many things. For example, the living space may be too small for the family, or may be in poor repair, or may be too expensive.
Applicant Information Meetings (AIMs) are mandatory for anyone who is thinking about applying to buy a Hartford Habitat house and are held at least once a year.
We genuinely welcome your interest in a Habitat house, and we look forward to seeing you at our next Applicant Information Meeting.
Yours in partnership,
