Frequently Asked Questions - On Volunteering
Q. Do I have to be an experienced builder?
A. Habitat will provide tools and training to any willing volunteer, skilled or unskilled. Construction experience is not a requirement.
Q. Are you building houses anywhere besides Hartford?
A. Specifically in Hartford and New Britain. (In the past - Bloomfield, East Hartford, Farmington, Manchester, Vernon, & Windsor)
Q. Besides building, what other ways can someone get involved with Habitat for Humanity?
A. We have many volunteer opportunities besides construction. For example, we're looking for snack providers, family partners, and volunteers to help with family selection, public speaking, and office work.
Q. How can high schools and colleges get involved?
A. A number of local schools and colleges are actively involved in Hartford Area Habitat, including University of Hartford, Trinity College, University of Connecticut’s Medical School and Central Connecticut State University as well as local high schools like Berlin High School, Conard High School, and Farmington High School. There are many more, and any school that would like to establish a campus chapter can email Turquoise D. Blue or call 860-541-2208, ext 108.
Q. Can young people volunteer?
A. Due to OSHA and insurance requirements, the minimum age requirement for youth volunteers is 16 years old to be on the job site. Hartford Habitat also requires that all construction volunteers ages 16 & 17 are accompanied by a parent, guardian, or chaperone at all times while volunteering at the worksites. Hartford Habitat reserves the right to ask for proof of age.
