Program Information
Hartford Area Habitat for Humanity is looking for families that want
to build and buy their own home. We want to work in partnership with
them. We are building new, single-family houses in several different
Hartford neighborhoods as well as in surrounding communities.
Occasionally, we have condominium units available as well in Hartford.
You are eligible to apply if your income is LESS than the amount
indicated on the Home Ownership Guide, which is based on 50 percent of
the median family income for Hartford County and varies with the size of
your family.
If you are eligible to apply, there are three qualifications:
- You must have a need for simple, decent, adequate housing.
- You are able to pay for Habitat housing as well as to meet your
other expenses
- You are willing to partner with us in building your house as
well as the houses of others.
Need can be many things. For
example, the living space may be too small for your family, or may be in
poor repair, or may be too expensive.
Ability to pay means that you have
enough income to cover the monthly payment for your new house as well as
your other expenses. A standard three-bedroom Habitat house costs about
$95,000. Our average homeowner spends $600-650 a month to own his or her
house: principal, property taxes, and property insurance. Utilities are
not included. How does that compare with the amount you now spend?
Willingness to partner is our way of
saying that we will build this house together. We require a one percent
down payment ($950), 150 sweat equity hours from each applicant, and
attendance at workshops on skills necessary for successful
homeownership.
Applicant Information Meetings (AIMs)
for people who are thinking about applying to buy a Habitat house are
held at least twice a year. You must attend an AIM to get an application
for our program. Please call the Habitat office to learn where we plan
to build, and when and where the AIM for those sites will be held.
Dial 541-2208 then
Press 3 for “homeownership opportunities” then

forward to seeing you at our next Applicant Information Meeting.
Yours in partnership,
Family Services
