Q. Do I have to be an experienced builder?
A. Habitat will provide tools and training to any willing volunteer,
skilled or unskilled. Construction experience is not a requirement.
Q. How often do you build?
A. Hartford Area Habitat for Humanity typically has several projects
going continuously throughout the year in Hartford and the surrounding
communities with a build schedule of approximately every Tuesday,
Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.
Q. Are you building houses anywhere besides Hartford?
A. Specifically in Hartford and New Britain. (In the past -
Bloomfield, East Hartford, Farmington, Manchester, Vernon, & Windsor)
Q. Besides building, what other ways can someone get involved with
Habitat for Humanity?
A. Yes! We are more in need of other volunteers. We have many
volunteer opportunities besides construction. Family partner, family
selection, public speaking, office work, site selection, running
fundraising events like the annual golf tournament and build-a-thon, and

Q. How can high schools and colleges get involved?
A. Habitat for Humanity has a program called Campus Chapter and
Youth Program, geared for high schools and colleges. A number of local
schools and colleges are actively involved in Hartford Area Habitat,
including University of Hartford, Trinity College, University of
Connecticut’s Medical School and Central Connecticut State University as
well as local high schools like Conard High School, Canton High School,
and University High School. There are many more, and any school that
would like to establish a campus chapter can contact Habitat for
Humanity International at 1-800-HABITAT or visit www.habitat.org.
Q. Can young people volunteer?
A. Here are our insurance restrictions:
No one under 16 is allowed on the construction site
16 and 17 year-olds have to be accompanied by a responsible adult,
cannot use power tools or use ladders/be off the ground.
Volunteers 18 and older can do all volunteer tasks.
